Fitness Center expands 24/7 access
HANSCOM AIR FORCE Base, Mass. – 66th Force Support Squadron officials recently expanded 24/7 access to the Fitness and Sports Center here for eligible users.
All personnel have until March 1 to review and sign a new Statement of Understanding, including all those already registered and using the facility.
“Anyone using 24/7 access must come to the Fitness and Sports Center to complete a new Statement of Understanding, which is a prerequisite to using the facility after hours,” said Paul Shoesmith, the fitness center’s operations director.
Among the expanded offerings to 24/7 access are the weight rooms and male and female locker room facilities, as well as granting eligible users the ability to sponsor and escort dependents under the age of 18.
“It’s important to note that dependents under the age of 18 must be supervised at all times,” said Jerry Turnbow, Fitness and Sports Center director.
Those deemed eligible before the change were active duty military and their dependents age 18 and older, federal civilians, nonappropriated fund employees, National Guard and Reserve service members, as well as military and civilian retirees.
According to Turnbow, cameras closely monitor the fitness center during unmanned hours.
"Our main focus is ensuring the well-being of all patrons using the facility," he said.
FSS officials suggest people not work out alone.
“To foster a safer fitness workout, it is recommended that personnel have an eligible wingman with them while working out after hours,” said 1st Lt. Leah Vincuilla, 66 FSS Sustainment Flight commander. “This will allow a quick response to any issues that arise related to personal safety or equipment.”
In addition to the weight rooms and locker room facilities, users have 24/7 access to the cardiovascular room, main gymnasium, upstairs stretching area, upstairs track, the warrior fitness aerobic gymnasium and the family fitness room.
Restricted areas include the bowling alley, fitness center offices, climbing wall, fitness bubble and the male and female locker rooms located in the bowling alley hallway.
The Hanscom fitness center has provided 24/7 access to Hanscom personnel since 2015. The program expanded in 2016 to include NAF employees as well as military and civilian retirees.
